The World War II Memorial will be located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. at the Rainbow Pool site at the east end of the Reflecting Pool. This is between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, and is a prominent location that is commensurate with the historical importance and lasting significance of World War II to America and the world.
President Clinton dedicated the memorial site on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 1995, and the design was created by architect Friedrich St.Florian. The actual groundbreaking is slated for Veterans Day in 2000, and the national fund-raising campaign is now under way. Already, notables such as the Oscar award-winning Steven Spielberg as well as Tom Hanks have signed on to raise public awareness. The World War II Memorial is to be funded almost entirely by private contributions, and the capital campaign goal for donations is set at $100 million. Co-chairing the fund-raising campaign will be former U.S. Senator Bob Dole, and Frederick W. Smith, the president and CEO of FDX Corp.
Right now you can be involved in building the World War II Memorial by becoming a Charter Member of the World War II Memorial Society, entering the names of veterans in the Registry of Remembrances, or participating in the Donor Programs.
