Dangerous Minds
What's so dangerous?
| You are capable of more than you know. Choose a goal that seems right for you and strive to be the best, however hard the path. Aim high. Behave honorably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs all you can give. (Edward O. Wilson) |

§ 801 of Education Amendments of 1974, P.L. 93-380 (Part A)
Recognizing that the Nation's economic, political, and social security require a well educated citizenry, the Congress (1) reaffirms, as a matter of high priority, the Nation's goal of equal educational opportunity, and (2) declares it to be the policy of the United States of America that every citizen is entitled to an education to meet his or her full potential without financial barriers. |

GENERAL EDUCATION PROVISIONS ACT - Legis. Hist. p4151, US Code 1974, Vol 3
Education Policy [objective and goal]
An educated citizenry has been an objective of the Nation since the earliest thinkers began planning a government for what were then colonies. Their wisdom is strikingly apparent today in surveys of our population which note the relationship between education and/or advanced training, and standards of living.
Therefore, it would be beneficial for the Congress to set out, as national policy, the proposition that each Amerrican, young or mature, urban or rural, wealthy, middle-income or low-income, handicapped or not handicapped, would receive all of the education and /or training that he or she can successfully absorb.
[This policy ... should be construed as an objective, a goal, in the sense that the founders of our nation considered an educated citizenry a goal.]
The language of the National Education Policy which has been made the first section of the G.E.P.A. is:
Congress (1) reaffirms, as a matter of high priority, the Nation's goal of equal educational opportunity reaffirms as a matter of highest priority the Nation's goal of equal educational opportunity. The Congress hereby declares it to be the policy of the United States of America that every citizen is entitled to an education to meet his or her full potential without financial barriers,
amd limited only by the desire to learn and ability to absorb such education. Our Nation's economic, political, and social security demand no less. |

All the founding fathers were educators: Franklin who founded an academy and a college, and a philosophical society and a library; Washington who left part of his fortune to found a college and ceaselessly advocated a national university; John Adams who wrote into the Constitution of Massachusetts a provision for a learned academy, and privileges for his own Harvard College, and who lived to see his son installed as Boylston professor of Rhetoric; Noah Webster who devoted his life to raising the standards of popular education; Richard Rush who helped found two colleges, and advocated the education of women; William Johnson who represented Connecticut in the Federal Convention and served as first president of the renamed Columbia College; the Pennsylvania Farmer, John Dickinson, who had the happiness to sponsor a college named after him; George Wythe who was not only Chief Justice of his state but Professor of Law at its college. Greatest of them all was Jefferson, who planned a complete educational system for Virginia, wrote educational provisions into the ordinances governing the West, and built the University of Virginia .... Where else in the western world do you find anything like this? |
