Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in hiring, promotion, compensation, and other
conditions of employment based upon race, color, creed, gender, pregnancy, or national origin. Its original intent
was to help ensure equal employment opportunites for all people. In the years since passage and enactment, the
Act has been reinforced and amplified by ancillary legislation which spells out the legal grounds for taking action
in cases of discrimination.
